Palm Cleaning

Dead fronds, messy berries & flowers are removed from palms. The most common palm, the Queen or Cocos palm, can be trimmed on a regular basis to keep them looking good & reduce the mess on the ground & perhaps the invasion of fruit bats feeding on the berries.

Our Terminology

  • Fronds .........the leafy branch
  • Seed Pods ...large "torpedo" cylindrical pods
  • Spades ........open pod casing
  • Butts ............the wide ends of fronds which stay attached to the trunk
  • Flowers .......yellow spray of flower which come out of seed pods
  • Berries ........large bunches which hang from crown, developed from flowers

It is our recommendation that palms be cleaned when the seed pods are fully developed prior to opening to the spray of yellow flowers. Besides lowering the price it will dramatically reduce the mess & subsequent hazard on the ground... those berries are like marbles & it is very easy to slip and fall.

Above are before and after pictures. It's important to not cut off too many green fronds or "shave" the head with a saw. The palm relies on fronds for photosynthesis and removing too many may stress it out. Cutting to deep in the head and shaving the butts could result in deformities in trunk growth.
