We understand your concerns with regard to protecting your other plants and structures. Taking care and not damaging anything is something that can be an art in this business--we are more than tree loppers. Too often we hear and see incidents that could have been avoided through professional care. I'm Eric Frei the owner of the business and am L5 diploma qualified arborist who actively provides tons of information on the Tree World Forum and post by the name of Ekka, there is a serious difference between trained qualified people and your chainsaw wielding "hacks".

Specialist Tree Lopping Equipment and Knowledge

No 1 dangerous job USA Traditionally in Brisbane the term tree lopping meant cutting the tree down to ground level, we refer to that as tree removal. If you wanted your tree cut in half (refering to trees not shrubs), like say cutting a 100' gum tree down to 50' high that is called topping within the industry ... but quite a few people do incorrectly refer to that as tree lopping also.

Whether we are tree lopping, pruning or aerial inspecting trees the job is dangerous. For personal safety we use special ropes and working saddles. Some ropes have a wire core inside them to aid in stiffness for using in a tree and some protection against chainsaw cuts.

large palmFor rigging we use rated ropes, pulleys, shackles and devices. The forces exerted on equipment can exceed the weight of the cut piece up to 10x!
Knowing how and where to cut is also vital. To complicate matters different trees react in different ways. Some trees are quite snappy and brittle whilst others, like pine, can be quite pliable and hang on. With pruning it is imperative that the correct cuts are made to assist in the wound defence. We are qualified arborists and know the cuts.

DiplomaBrisbane tree loppers do get injured and even killed, more often than you think and when you investigate you find often that they are not trained arborists. Part of the problem is unlike other trades which have a regulation/licencing system this industry has nothing, and any ole idiot is in it! They even have absolute lies on their ads like professional and qualified, ring the boss, they have nothing but lip service and names of contractors who they might get in occasionally if you're lucky. Here you'll see a protected tree get hacked and the guy argue it was right plus the customer get a fine, and here you'll see the story on a Nerang "tree lopper" who fell and lived. Now you might think it's not your problem, however you better think twice about that as you are hiring them AND ACCORDING TO OH&S you are responsible to make sure they are competent and council will fine you for cutting down or hacking protected trees. That means checking, you can see my qualifications but ask yourself this, if you spent 4 years+ getting them why would you hide them? You wouldn't, and the reason why most of those others dont display them is simple, they dont have them. Be careful, we are not all the same. Watch the Current Affairs video below.

Uprooted Palms

uprooted palm

Unlike trees the trunk of a palm stays the same diameter for it's entire life. As palms grow taller more force is placed on the root system where it meets the ground. Roots work in tension only like ropes. Of most importance is the roots on the outside circumference, they do the most work just like guy wires on an aerial or tent. If this outer area is diminishing, or the palm looks like it's being pumped up out of the ground then it's stability is certainly compromised. The picture to the right shows how little root area remained and luckily that palm only fell on a clothes line. This palm tree picture shows an overall view of a group and this picture shows a close up of the problem numbered by severity.

Tragedy in Port Douglas Australia

On Thursday 25 September 2008 a Travellers Palm (Ravenala madagascariensis) failed at the base killing a 4 year old boy on holidays from Victoria. Channel 10 News intervied me on Friday to speak about these palms, the video is embedded below. We have also a discussion thread running about the incident at Tree World with pictures and another news video.
